Prime Minister and LDP President Abe met with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, who is known for being both a Japanophile and a moderate. This was the first time a Japanese prime minister has visited Iran in 41 years, in this milestone year of the 90th anniversary of the establishment of Japan-Iran diplomatic relations. In his remarks, Prime Minister Abe said, "The peace and stability in the Middle East are essential for global prosperity." He praised Iran's continuous cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and said he expected the country to continue to abide by the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
