On August 6, on the day of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in 1945, Prime Minister and LDP President Abe attended the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony to commemorate the 72nd anniversary of the attack. Also in attendance were approximately 50,000 atomic bomb survivors and families of victims. In his remarks, the Prime Minister emphasized the heavy burden Japan carries, as the only country on which nuclear weapons have been dropped, to "make steady progress towards 'a world without nuclear weapons.'"
