U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis became the first Cabinet member of the Trump administration to visit Japan. Secretary Mattis paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister and LDP President Shinzo Abe at the Prime Minister's Office on February 3. Prime Minister Abe welcomed Secretary Mattis to Japan, saying, "This is a testament to the solidity of the Japan-U.S. alliance is."
