When Japan returned to the international community after the war, the first international conference it attended was the Asian-African Conference (Bandung Conference) of 1955. At the summit commemorating the 60th anniversary of that gathering, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe made a speech containing a strong call for solidarity. "We share a 'desire for peace' with our friends in Asia and Africa and must work together to combat terrorism and infectious disease," he said.
