The LDP and the New Komeito have met 11 times to discuss the new security legal framework based on the directions articulated by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe during a press conference in May.
After the committee meeting of the ruling parties, the LDP's Vice President Masahiko Komura, who chaired the meeting, said that "we have been able to make preparations that will achieve most of what we want (in enhancing deterrent force)." He emphasized that the measures "place firm controls" on the exercise of the right of self-defense in the event of an armed attack on another country with which Japan has close ties.
"It will be crucial to explain these measures to the Japanese people in a way that is easily understood, seek their understanding, and respond to the many concerns that have been voiced," Said Secretary-General Shigeru Ishiba during the press conference. The government and ruling parties are committed to working together and doing everything possible to provide the Japanese people with full explanations.
