The Liberal Democratic Party's annual convention took place on the 18th of January in a Tokyo hotel. This year's convention is said to be at a turning point when the party will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its founding. This important convention saw the party return to the "roots" of its politics. Reports on the state of the party and election policy were presented by Secretary-General Takebe and approved by the convention. President of the LDP Junichiro Koizumi began his New Years speech by expressing his deep condolences for the victims of the Sumatra earthquake and tidal wave. He also clearly laid out the role of the LDP over the next 50 years: "Using experience and wisdom that has overcome numerous challenges; embracing the winds of change in each new era; making reform our custom; building Japan's development through continuing stability and peace - I believe the ruling party LDP must be able to tackle issues in these ways." In addition, the convention welcomed honorary guest Kyoko Nakayama former advisor to the Chief Cabinet Secretary and North Korea abductees issue activist. The LDP also received the energetic support of Hiroshi Yamamoto, silver medal winner in the archery contest at last year's Athens Olympics. |
